Quick Reminder: The Porn Industry Has Supported And Awarded Notorious Racist Michael Lucas For Years

BjWb2sSIgAAmKGh1.jpg_large1While many in gay media have been calling out the GayVN awards show all weekend long for having an “ethnic” category at their upcoming event (a category they’ve had for literally 20 years, since 1998), it’s worth pointing out that the Cybersocket Awards, the AVNs (the straight version of the GayVNs), and the XBiz Awards all have even more “ethnic” categories at their ceremonies, and they’ve had them for years. So, this isn’t just about one gay porn awards show, it’s about almost all the awards shows, gay and straight.

But, as noted here the other day, the discussion of racism in the porn industry should be held in the context of the entire industry—not just the awards shows, which are reflective of the industry—and, specifically, the racist porn studio owners who’ve been allowed to thrive in the industry. The most well-known and the most racist of those producers, of course, is Michael Lucas of Lucas Entertainment, whose blatant racism, bigotry, and xenophobia has been out in the open for nearly a decade, and whose career has been simultaneously supported by porn retailers, porn trade magazines, porn awards shows, porn blogs, and porn performers who work for him. For anyone who has somehow missed Lucas’s out-and-proud racism over the years, here’s a quick reminder with just a few of the many examples.

Here’s Michael Lucas responding to the Syrian refugee crisis in 2015, labeling Muslims as “barbarians”:

Earlier this year, Michael Lucas again labeled Muslim refugees as “barbarians” during an interview with white supremacist website Breitbart:

What I always recommend is when you see how these people live, what they do, start appreciating more our society. And protect our society from those barbarians as vigorously as they protect their society. […] I am referring to the Muslim world. To the world of Islam. We will not be able to change them but we have to protect our world and our way of life as vigorously as they protect their way of life. And yes immigration is a problem. Yes, on the left this is a very unpopular opinion. If we are taking (refugees and immigrants) we should not take from the pool of people that is so hostile to us. […] Muslim immigration is a problem. They come here, they lobby, they bring hate. And that is not the right pool of people we should be taking from. That is very unfortunate but it would be terrible for refugees and it would be terrible for us because there will be a lot of hate. People don’t want really refugees from Muslim countries because it is such a different culture that will collide with our culture. They will radicalize much faster here and that is why I am very much against this immigration.

Back in 2015, following the terrorist attack in Paris, Michael Lucas tweeted that “all terrorists are Muslims”:

In 2016, Michael Lucas wrote an op-ed that was simultaneously published by both Out Magazine and Breitbart (it appears Lucas pitched it to both outlets, and they both ran it), and in this one, Lucas defends gay Republicans who are voting for Donald Trump. While there was no overt racism here, his defense of gay Republicans speaks for itself (Lucas famously announced his support of Mitt Romney in 2012), as he falsely claimed that gay Republicans were being “denied” an opposing opinion:

And it’s not only individual members of the LGBT community who are denying gays their right to an opposing opinion. Just last week, a leading LGBT magazine published a column by someone who concluded that although PayPal founder Peter Thiel has sex with other men, he should not be considered gay, because he’s a Republican who has endorsed Trump. Who is in charge of devising these bizarre litmus test?

Another quick reminder: it was gay media outlets like Out and The Advocate that gave racist Michael Lucas a platform to spout his racism for years, with The Advocate in particular publishing dozens of his “commentary” articles from 2010 to 2013, including one in which he called a Mosque in New York City a “monument to terrorism.” His columns for both the Here Media publications appear to finally have stopped last year, and now he’s been relegated to the white supremacist site Breitbart, where he’s interviewed frequently and routinely published, and was expressing more Islamophobia last month.

Despite his brazen bigotry being on full display for years, Michael Lucas and his studio are routinely nominated for dozens of awards at the Cybersocket, XBiz, and GayVN ceremonies, and he’s in fact up for dozens more at all these shows in January. Lucas has been allowed to continue for years because his horrible movies somehow make money, with XBiz, AVN, and all the gay porn blogs (except this one, obviously) promoting his movies (most of which are filmed in foreign countries, so as to avoid being sued here in the states for fraud and non-payment) and turning a blind eye to his racism and xenophobia.

So, while calling out awards shows for their racially insensitive nomination process is a good place to start, directing some of the rightful outrage at an actual outright and shameless racist like Michael Lucas—who creates content that, like it or not, is financially beneficial for the industry—might be the more meaningful approach for creating real change. If the gay porn industry and fans of gay porn do care about racism, they’ll stop supporting and awarding someone who’s been engaged in hate speech for as long as he’s been in the public eye, and who is currently a featured author at a white supremacist website.
