It’s a sad day for conservative British twink Gabriel Cross, as UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will resign in the next few hours. Via CNN:

Boris Johnson is to resign as the Conservative Party leader on Thursday and is expected to address the nation in the coming hours.

“The Prime Minister will make a statement to the country today,” a Downing Street spokesman told CNN.

Johnson has become engulfed in a series of scandals that forced even his most stalwart supporters to abandon him.

More than 50 lawmakers have resigned from the government since Tuesday, furious about the botched handling of the resignation by Johnson’s former deputy chief whip, Chris Pincher, who was accused of groping two men last week.

No word yet on who will replace Johnson, but here’s how it works, via Axios:

The race to replace him as both leader of the Conservative Party and as prime minister looks wide open. Top officials in Johnson’s government, including recently-resigned Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, are likely to run, and Johnson rivals like former Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt are also expected to enter the race.

The first stage of the leadership election will begin with the 358 Conservative members of Parliament voting to narrow a list of declared candidates down to two. Then 180,000 or so dues-paying members of the Conservative Party will vote to elect the next leader.
