Sade Returns With First New Song In Over Six Years In Celebration Of Her Trans Son
As if having Sade back isn’t emotional enough, this song, “Young Lion,” is about her son, a trans man who came out in 2016. Granted, it’s only one song and not a full new Sade album, but it’s great to hear her voice again. A little bit on her son and the song being part of a new concept album in support of the trans community:
In 2016, on National Coming Out Day, Sade’s child, Izaak Theo Adu, came out as a transgender man. In September 2019, Izaak posted a message online, thanking his mother for her support through his transition. In the fall of 2024, Sade and the Red Hot Organization’s TRANSA project released “Young Lion”, a song dedicated to her son.
I hadn’t followed Sade’s personal life and knew nothing about her family, but I’m so glad her son is doing well, and this is a beautiful celebration of his life. The video for “Young Lion,” which uses home video footage from Sade that goes back several years, directed by Sophie Muller:
