SAG Awards Nominations: One Battle After Another Leads With Sinners Right Behind
Does anyone care about Hollywood award shows right now? It’s a brief, meaningless distraction, I guess. The SAG nominations are out today (the Golden Globes are on Sunday, and Oscar noms are out on January 22nd), and the list is down below.
I liked Marty Supreme a lot (although, it ran a bit long, and I don’t normally mind long movies) and hope Timmy wins. I wanted to love One Battle After Another, but ultimately I thought it was just fine, and certainly not PTA’s best (that would be Phantom Thread or Magnolia). Incredible filmmaking and stunning to look at, but the story didn’t have me on the edge of my seat.
Sinners was also just fine, but I thought the third act and big vampire battle was totally anticlimactic.
Bugonia had great acting and raised a lot of important questions in a clever way, but I’ve never been able to get into the weirdness of that director’s movies. Everything and everyone in his movies are too unrelatable.
I would love for the exceptional Rose Byrne to win, despite the fact that her movie, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, was a dark snoozefest. You know exactly where it’s going after about 30 minutes, and the only reason to watch is for Byrne’s performance.
Weapons was fun and I loved the structure, but once the villain and the evil was revealed, it lost some steam for me. Hilarious and thrilling ending, though. Amy Madigan will deservedly win.
Zero interest in Hamnet, Blue Moon, Song Sung Blue, Wicked, and Frankenstein, so will never see those.
