Hulu Not Picking Up Buffy The Vampire Slayer Reboot

The completed pilot for the Buffy reboot/sequel starring Sarah Michelle Gellar was directed by Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, but Hulu still said “no thanks” after watching it, and the entire project has been scrapped. Gellar made the announcement today in the video above, and while there’s been no explanation as to why it was rejected, sources told Deadline that “Zhao’s sensibility may not have been the perfect match for the reboot.” Zhao’s Nomadland (which won her two Oscars) was a total snooze, and I’ve heard her movie Hamnet is absurdly melodramatic and boring, so it was an odd choice to have her filming such a dynamic and action-packed series. And yet, Hulu ordered and paid for the pilot, so they obviously had no idea what they were doing. As is often the case in Hollywood, this was a total waste of time and money for all involved, but I do wonder if the pilot will be leaked at some point.

For now, we can at least look forward to seeing Gellar in Ready Or Not 2 when it’s released next week. The trailer:
