Anora Wins Best Picture, Actress, Director, Screenplay, And Editing At Dreadfully Dull Oscars
The good news: Anora, the best movie of 2024, swept the Oscars with five wins out of six nominations. Too bad Best Supporting nom Yura Borisov didn’t pull off an upset and make it a clean sweep.
The bad news: It was the worst Oscar telecast in recent memory, maybe even more boring and lifeless than the 2021 COVID ceremony, which felt like a funeral. No memorable presenters with hilarious banter (although, June Squibb was cute, and it was great to see Daryl Hannah), no shocking political speeches, a noticeable lack of real A-list movie stars, an unmemorable Conan O’Brien (he had a handful of zingers in his monologue, but that was it), no funny bits or montages, and nearly 30 minutes of wasted time with stupid musical numbers. Did we really need to see someone (I guess that was the skeletal Ariana Grande, who always looks like she’s about to collapse) singing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” for the 899838974th time at the Oscars? And what in god’s name was the James Bond dance number with Margaret Qualley? Snow White and Rob Lowe are rolling over in their graves.
The worst acceptance speech of the night, and truly the worst Best Actor speech I’ve ever seen in my life, was of course from Adrien Brody:
Why did it feel like he was delivering a eulogy, for himself? That was so pointless and dull, it almost makes The Brutalist feel exciting. It would be one thing if he had something important to say and was building up to a Big Moment, but instead it was a bunch of cliches and empty platitudes. “Let’s fight for what’s right!” Uhhh, OK!
I was disappointed that Demi Moore didn’t win, but at the same time, I was happy to see a very deserving Mikey Madison win. She thanked the sex worker community in her speech:
And the Best Picture win for Anora:
