Barbra Streisand In Talks To Perform At Oscars

Barbra Streisand is in talks to perform at this year’s Oscars as part of an In Memoriam tribute segment on Robert Redford, sources confirmed to Deadline. Streisand starred alongside Redford in the 1973 romantic drama The Way We Were directed by Sydney Pollack, the only film they were in together. The title song, written by Alan and Marilyn Bergman and Marvin Hamlisch and sung by Streisand, was Billboard’s No. 1 single of 1974, when it also won the Oscar as well as Song of the Year at the Grammys. It’s not confirmed if that’s the song in play for a potential Streisand performance. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which has not released many details about this year’s ceremony outside a few presenters, declined comment.
Streisand famously suffers from severe stage fright, so any performance she gives always feels special. Her last concert was in 2017.
While singing “The Way We Were” would obviously make the most sense, you’ll recall that Streisand already sang that song in a tribute to songwriter Marvin Hamlisch during the 2013 Oscars. Given the significance of the song and its timelessness, I think it’ll be fine if she does it again. Here she was in 2013:
