Sinners Sets New Record With 16 Oscar Nominations

Posted January 22, 2026 by with 1 comment

Maybe I should watch Sinners again, because while it was fine and I liked it, a record-breaking 16 noms seems a bit much. It’d be cool if Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor (a split vote between Leo and Timothée could give him the win), since he was obviously the best part of the movie. If you haven’t seen his first film with Ryan Coogler, go back and watch the excellent Fruitvale Station. While you’re at it, go back even further and watch him in The Wire, but be warned, it’s heartbreaking.

Biggest and best surprise of the morning is seeing Come See Me In The Good Light nominated for Best Documentary, and I also love that the entire cast of Sentimental Value is nominated. The sister played by Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas was a quiet scene stealer, and she deserves Best Supporting Actress. The F1 nomination is a hilarious joke, proving that there are still plenty of Oscar voters who are completely out of touch. On the other hand, the most fantastic news is that the horrendous shitshow Wicked was completely snubbed, receiving a very deserved zero nominations. Voters were smart enough not only to recognize that it sucked even more than the 2024 version, but also that it was filmed at the exact same time as that first movie, so nominating it again in all the tech categories (makeup, costumes, production design, etc.) would be absurd and redundant.
