Facebook Movie Bombs At Box Office
As I predicted when the trailer dropped over the summer, the stupid Facebook movie was as stupid as I suspected, and it bombed at the box office this weekend. People hate Zuckerberg, they hate Facebook, and they hate all the tech oligarchs who are destroying the world, and nobody wants to watch a movie about these assholes, even if the movie portrays them negatively. Via Deadline:
The Social Reckoning from Sony opened considerably below forecasts with a $5.5 million launch as audiences shrugged at Aaron Sorkin’s Facebook takedown pic. Inspired by true events and the whistleblower who started the social media reckoning we’re seeing play out today, this Aaron Sorkin original screenplay is a companion piece to the hit film The Social Network.
Get ready for more box office bombs when the same thing happens to the upcoming movie about Sam Altman (Artificial, starring Andrew Garfield) and the Elon Musk documentary (although that’s not going into as wide of a release). Whether they’re building data centers, driving people crazy via social media, or buying up movie studios, everyone is sick of billionaire pigs, and they’re obviously not going to pay $20 to sit in a dark room for two hours to be reminded of how awful they are. People want total escape (e.g., The Odyssey, Backrooms, Spider-Man), not real-life villains who are living among us right now. There’s only so much we can take, what with the pedo-in-chief already on TV nonstop and using our tax dollars to (illegally) air his fascist government propaganda ads.
