A container ship from Singapore that was headed to Sri Lanka lost power and struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in the Baltimore harbor at about 1:30 a.m. last night, causing a total collapse of the 1.6-mile bridge into the Patapsco River. Video:

As of post time, coast guard and fire officials were searching for at least 20 people believed to be in the water. Some are construction workers who were on the bridge when it was hit, while others are said to be civilians. The Key Bridge was an integral piece of the “Baltimore Beltway” state highway system, carrying nearly 12 million vehicles annually.

While the potential loss of life and hundreds of millions of dollars in reconstruction are unfathomable, this could’ve obviously been even more of a catastrophe if the ship had hit the bridge at 1:30 in the afternoon as opposed to 1:30 in the morning. Updated coverage should be coming in here throughout the day.
