Laphonza Butler Will NOT Run For Feinstein’s Senate Seat In 2024

She was just sworn in two weeks ago after the surprise appointment by Gavin Newsom, but it turns out Laphonza Butler will not be running to hold Dianne Feinstein’s California Senate seat in the election next year. This was obviously the right move on her part, given that voters have no idea who she is, she’s never held elected office, and she doesn’t even live in California. Assuming he knew she wasn’t going to run for the seat, Newsom picking her to temporarily hold the seat was actually genius, since it means he didn’t have to play favorites or tip the scales in any direction for any of the actual nominees (i.e., Katie Porter, Barbara Lee, etc.). Report above via FoxLA, and this quote from Butler via CNN:

“I’ve spent the past 16 days pursuing my clarity – what kind of life I want to have, what kind of service I want to offer and what kind of voice I want to bring forward,” Butler said in a statement. “After considering those questions I’ve decided not to run for Senate in the upcoming election. Knowing you can win a campaign doesn’t always mean you should run a campaign.”
