Laura Dern Replaces Helena Bonham Carter On White Lotus

Laura Dern and Mike White are longtime friends who previously worked together on the excellent Enlightened (also at HBO), so this was an easy solution and quick fix after Helena Bonham Carter’s firing last week. Via Deadline:

Oscar winner Laura Dern, a longtime collaborator and friend of White’s, has joined Season 4 of his HBO series set in France. She replaces Helena Bonham Carter who left late last week. Dern will play a new character, which is being developed and written for her by White. HBO said at the time of Carter’s exit that after filming had gotten underway on the new season the previous week, “it had become apparent” that the character created by White for Carter “did not align once on set.”

Dern had an uncredited cameo in season two of White Lotus, but she was only heard over the phone while talking to a character played by Michael Imperioli. Filming on season four already started, so introducing a brand new character suggests the entire plot could be altered? Each season thus far has included a mysterious murder or shocking death, so it’ll be fun to see how, if at all, Dern’s character is involved.
