TitanMen Has Not Released New Content In Six Weeks—Has The Iconic Gay Porn Studio Shut Down?

Posted May 8, 2018 by with 53 comments

titan1Is TitanMen the latest gay porn studio to go belly up (and not in a good way)? That’s what many are assuming, as the iconic producer of such hits as Cauke For Free, Folsom Flesh, and Redneck Hollow hasn’t released any new content for six weeks. The last time Titan released a new scene for its members was on March 28th, and it was a duo starring Dirk Caber and Dakota Rivers.

newr_action_DirkDakota_0691Most gay porn studios typically release new scenes once or twice a week (some a little less, some a little more), and that had been Titan’s schedule for several years—until March 28th. For the last six weeks, the studio has instead been putting up “remastered” scenes from movies previously released over a decade ago, including Barnstorm (2007), Boiler (2006), and Fallen Angel 3 (2001). Those are good movies that many might not have seen, but members undoubtedly join(ed) the studio’s site to see new productions, and if they’re no longer producing new movies, Titan should disclose that.

Reps for Titan have not responded to multiple requests for comment and clarification over the last two weeks, so at this point, it’s safe to assume that they’ve shut down. After direct messages and emails went unanswered, Str8UpGayPorn tweeted Titan publicly today to ask about the status of the studio, but they didn’t respond to that, either. (Their Twitter account has turned into a political and pop culture feed, with the majority of their tweets having nothing to do with their content.)

TitanMen (also referred to as Titan Media) was launched in 1995 by director Bruce Cam and Robert Kirsch (who died in 2001). The San Francisco-based company produced award-winning movies for over 20 years, several of which were made by high-profile gay adult film directors Ray Dragon and Joe Gage.

Free porn on tube sites and social media as well as performers’ self-produced home movies continue to chip away at traditional studios that don’t know how to market to new consumers, aren’t able to adapt to changes in viewing habits, and don’t introduce exclusive stars who can’t be seen elsewhere, and TitanMen appears to be the latest casualty. They join a growing list of gay porn studios that have had to either shut down completely or produce content infrequently due to a decline in sales over the last decade, including Jake Cruise, Channel One Releasing, Jet Set Men, Colby Jansen’s “ColbysCrew” (which was only online for a few months), Randy Blue, and several smaller studios. Meanwhile, some independently-owned studios like Sean Cody, Falcon, and Active Duty couldn’t survive on their own, and were purchased by adult entertainment conglomerates Mindgeek, AEBN, and Gamma, respectively.

Let me know when family dick or treasure island shuts down.

  • King

Interesting. Wasn’t there publicity about them starting to shoot condomless scene a few months back?

    • FrenchBug

I’d be interested to know if that “decision” actually ended up accelerating their demise. Jasun Mark clearly left them sometime late last year and he *was* basically Titan creatively for the past few years.
Maybe he left because of that decision and things snowballed in a way where they gave up on producing anything?
One of those interesting behind-the-scenes stories that would be so much more interesting than the latest tantrum of Helix twinks and, yet, we will never know because they will never talk. Oh well.

      • McM.

Damn, now I want to know what happened.

Maybe someone else could have stepped in and revitalized production. Or brought Kristopher Weston back.

        • Jace

Kristofer Weston is barebacking his way through Mormon Boyz, so i doubt he’ll be back.

          • c_find

That being said blacklisting BB performers probably wasn’t the wisest thing

          • That Guy

I thought they gave rule up when they literally couldn’t find enough quality performers that didn’t bareback previously?

          • c_find

Very true but I think they did it too late, I think it’s only been about 2-3 years they dropped that “requirement” and by that point the damage was already done and Titan turned into Grandpa porn.

          • McM.

You’d think a director/producer would make more money than performers. That’s the way it should work, right? Studios paying staff directors more than independent contractors?

Anyway I just remembered Kristopher Weston was with Colt Studios, not Titan.

  • FrenchBug

Titan had been harmstrung the past few years by their insistance on rotating the same cast of six to eight performers ad nauseam but they still were shooting quality movies in a technical sense (without sacrificing the porn aspect), trying things, and putting out feature films.
They were iconic, and while I can’t say I have jerked off to them in many years, I will miss them.

    • c_find

The problem if they got stale. I actually liked that they decided to do condom porn in spite of most studio going bareback for a quick buck. But the last few years their scenes have been lackluster and robotic and the fact that they cut their fetish line just even hurt the company greatly. But I’m guess they were having money problems because quality started to drop when they moved from 4scenes to only three.

      • FrenchBug

Another issue they had, and I have mentioned this before, was their ridiculous production schedule. They would release movie/scenes almost a year after they were shot.
Tristan Jaxx, when he came back, did his first scene with them. By the time it got released, he had been in dozens of (mostly crappy) webscenes all over the place.
I mean, seriously, how did their PR not think of, I dunno, releasing it as a web-first special, and then include it in the feature film it was intended to later? I realize the things we criticize about studios sometimes come down to things that we don’t know about (budget, technical problems, legal) but this was an obvious gimme stunt waiting to happen.

  • nick

When they were doing stuff like the Fallen Angel movies they were unbeatable, the guys were hot (very hot), the locations and filming were perfect.
But that was back in the days when you actually bought a movie, on DVD, you couldn’t really get anything for free.

Oh, and Dred Scott, that guy was just perfect (imo)

    • BlkManLuvsPorn

Yeah…Dred Scott was the best. I wonder what happened to him!

      • c_find

I heard he died but not 100% sure

        • nick

Oh no, I hope not, I have a fantasy of him as some grizzly grey daddy………oh crap how I’m excited.

    • FrenchBug

And those were the days where, when you thought a performer like Dred Scott was super hot, the only way you had to see him was to buy a Titan movie. They had found and signed exclusive models and you could only see them there. Those models weren’t all over social media (which didn’t exist) peddling their own wares, showing off, revealing to the world that they are crazy or dumb. They weren’t doing six scenes a month for a variety of websites.

Titan and the studios have done a lot of things wrong over the past decade and could have negotiated the changes better. But those changes would have screwed their business model regardless.

  • wdeee

To be real, the bareback market is KILLING them. I know they have qualms with it but that’s what sells right now and that’s why 90% of studios are doing BB now, even MEN is experimenting with it. Bareback is the future and TitanMen is gonna have to sink or swim (especially when most of the models they use go raw at other studios).

    • BlkManLuvsPorn

Exactly! With them being in San Francisco which is the cusp of pro active treatments (i.e. PrEP) for HIV, etc., they should have gone bareback long time ago. This goes for Raging Stallion and Falcon as well.

With them trying to be staunchly condom, I knew they would fail eventually.

And we won’t even begin to discuss their lack of diversity over the last several years… the same white faces with the occasional light brown black or latino to satisfy those who want some color!

      Buh bye!

      • wdeee

        Agree 100%

  • That Guy

We all knew it was coming. Bareback has been a trend since 2010, when Bel Ami and Corbin Fisher were experimenting with Bareback. Then Sean Cody in 2011, and it goes on from there. I knew that when we saw Cockyboys and Men experimenting with bareback in Feb and Raging falcon doing bareback a few weeks later, resistance was over. Titan couldn’t see the writing on the wall, and now they’re gone. I predict that falcon (They already profit off bareback, btw) and every other relevant studio will begin experimenting with bareback by the end of the year or they’ll go bankrupt.

    • nick

The thing is, the bareback stuff they are throwing out is no hotter than the condom stuff they did years ago, especially at Raging Falcon, which has become very humdrum of late.
I understand how a condom could make a difference if you are personally having the sex, but when your just watching what difference does it make, the offending piece of rubber is mostly in someones ass, you can’t even see it ?

      • c_find

Well I like both condom and BB and BBB has the advantage of flow. The scenes flow much more organically because you don’t have to cut for the actor to put on the condom. That being said. You are absolutely right a lot of studios changed over to BB have just been lazy. You still need connection and some for of creative filming for both condom and BB.

        • nick

I use that cut/pause to change hands 😁

  • Always Looking

As much as I have been a fan of Titan, I can’t really say I’ve been all that supportive since late 2009/2010. The content and exclusives just haven’t been there for me. Also, they were still stuck on the physical disc market – pushing out lots of blu rays (which I loved in 2007-2010 to go with my then new blu ray player) – when the market shifted towards streaming/download about 2012 or so. Lastly, the move from 4 scene films to 3 extended scenes was bogus. River Patrol was one of the first porn films I ever saw. Cliff Parker and York Powers were gods in my just turned 21 y.o. eyes. The Fallen Angel series and so much of their back catalog is filled with gems. I don’t think the bareback trend killed them. Content is king. If something is hot, it’s hot. I can watch films like Trespass, Slammer, Island Guardian, Fluid, The Cop Shack series, Arcade on Route 9, the Mens Room series, the Fallen Angel series, 110 Degrees In Tucson, Eruption, Breathless, Desert Train, Back to Barstow, and Gorge all day everyday, despite the condoms. I just can’t think of any really recent Titan stuff that’s been anywhere near as hot. Jasun Mark kept them alive with his technical work, but his movies were just related loops. They weren’t story driven. The best Titan films where story/theme driven – from the likes of Joe Gage, Brian Mills, and Ray Dragon. Sagat was their last truly notable/memorable exclusive. All in all, no real exclusives, a middling director, and a behind the times distribution model is no way to stay in business.

  • fafafa

Titan went pretty went down the drain for me after Dean Flynn left. any details on what happened to him? i’d kill to see how he looks like now or who is his husband/bf! sigh… dm me if you got deets 😉 lol

  • OverKill

Titan use to be the shit back in the day. They had a wide set of performers Dred Scott, Damien Crosse, Dean Flynn, Marco Blaze, Tony Buff, etc.and then they fell off by using the same performers, scenes aren’t that great anymore and they have to compete with bareback studios.

  • Hari Kalyan

To be fair, Colby Jansen said via IG that he simply gave up on his site because OnlyFans was a much cheaper option for him. And I’m still waiting to hear the real reason why RandyBlue crashed and burned after being the bes gay porn site bar none.

    • Zachary Sire

To be fair, Colby Jansen might want to explain that to the advertisers he still owes money to.

      • SYMGN

And he can add the 9.99 for my subscription to his onlyfans page. What a waste of money. Whilst I enjoy CJ performing BB sex, I will not tolerate bad lighting, bad camera angles and bad music.

        • McM.

What the hell else were you expecting from an OnlyFans page? lol

OF is all quick-n-dirty clips shot to retain monthly subscribers. That’s it. Your complaint is probably why none of these guys offer free previews to potential subscribers.

          • FrenchBug

It is true for *most* Onlyfans.
Jayden Grey’s OnlyFans with his husband has actually a handful of pretty good scenes – amateur as they might be – and the image quality is good. The angles are still, well, sextape-like but some performers put a minimum of effort into doing something half-decent.

          • McM.

BigCMen is on the same level as DeviantOtter, but I do have to give it to them for making sure their clips are well-lit and edited. Shaky cellphone footage aside you can at least see the action, sometimes from a POV perspective. If the numbers are still the same (subscription rate times fans with 20% taken by the platform) then those two are currently making approximately $5,500/month from their channel. So they’re doing something right.

From what I see, they’re one of the few who bother to try. Overall, OnlyFans is pretty craptastic. I cannot understand shelling out $10-$15 on multiple channels for occasional clips of a guy jackin’ it in a Starbucks restroom when $25/month can get you well-produced full-length scenes on a schedule from TitanMen or GuysInSweatpants. Guess I’m weird that way.

          • FrenchBug

Well, you ARE weird in plenty of ways 😉 but I agree with you on this one.

          • nick

You’re right and also, jackin’ it in a Starbucks restroom and recording it on your cell phone does not make you a porn “star”

          • nick

I’ve thought about OF but really I think my imagination and a couple of pics of the person in question will be more fun than a crappy video of them having a wank.

      • alex

Hey Zach – Manhunt and big-money showoff Jonathan Crutchley owned Colby’sCrew – you should go after them/him for the money they owe. We did and they paid.

    • McM.

TBH I really enjoyed ColbysCrew. As for OnlyFans being a cheaper option…. it shows in quality.

  • Drew Kingston

Why I want to join and support a site instead of watching free porn on tubes? Because they have good handsome models well filmed. Bad camera angles, bad lighting, bad direction, shooting too fast with models who have no time to get a hard-on are a turn-off. If an onlyf@n has better videos than professional sites it’s natural that members cancel their memberships.

  • Marcus Collack

Maybe they are making more money without reducing overhead, they have a lot of content, it’s possible. They might not be making a lot of money, but they can still be making a profit, because of no new models, no model salaries, no hotel stays, no plane tickets. Making a profit while cutting the majority of your overhead is not a bad idea, especially since they don’t want to go bareback.

  • Owen

They recently had a Lifetime subscription special for like $100, and I was about to buy it until I realized the site hadn’t provided consistent updates in months. It left a bad taste in my mouth and it felt like a shady cash grab right before they closed for good. I’m glad I held off.

  • Estelle

Didn’t jasun mark help run Jake cruise into the ground as well (not that that wasn’t a pretty easy thing to do to begin with)

    • FrenchBug

Jasun Mark was working there but can we really blame him for JakeCruise’s demise?
I mean, seriously, the *directing* at Jake Cruise was actually not half-bad at all.

  • David1983

This was one of my favorite studios in the early 2000’s….Dean Flynn, Arpad Miklos, Dirk Jager…fuck they were on their prime…I blame Jasun Mark, what a boring director.

  • The Porn Emperor

So Jasun Mark left? He was really the last nail in the coffin. Titan started out as a studio focused on lush visuals and a dreamlike atmosphere. Then Bruce Cam departed (and sold his part of the company, I assume). Then they split with Joe Gage, for whatever reason. At that same time, they started including just 3 overly-long scenes per movie. Then they hired Jasun Mark, whose direction was painfully pedestrian and generic. They were always great with casting, and maintained high technical standards, but there was no creative vision. A sad end, if it’s truly gone. I suppose someone will buy up their library and name–AEBN will probably make them part of Hot Raging Falcon, since they’re also in San Francisco.

It would be nice to see some of their performers work for other studios, though. Maybe do some bareback? I’d love to see Jesse Jackman with cum oozing out his ass. .

  • Cosmic

What’s funny is they’re one of the few studios that use still use condoms and everyone knows their models are all raging cumdumps off screen.

    • McM.

Yeah, they really loosened the reigns of not hiring guys known for bareback work.

      • c_find

I don’t see that as a bad thing. They should of done it way earlier. Their talent pool would of been much wider

        • FrenchBug

          I will dissent here.
Widening the talent pool by allowing bareback performers is lazy. The talent pool out there could be extremely wide if they took the time to cast outside of already-working models. Instead of just a talking point, that policy could have been the springboard for an aggressive scouting policy.
But, like so many studios, they stopped model-hunting: that is, in my opinion, one of the problems of gay porn today.
They set the bar high and, then, shrugged.

In the end, I don’t think the policy mattered very much one way or another. I liked the symbolism of it in principle, but their “no-BB” performer policy started to become hypocritical very quickly when they ignored their exclusives posting bareback videos on social media.
BUT I still thought it had some value as an educational statement back when condom was the only “safe sex” option. Sa

          • McM.

Didn’t think of it that way. I’m so used to seeing the same models jump from studio to studio, so the idea of Titan maintaining a roster escaped me. I figure Titan did attempt recruiting new talent; Eric Nero was received without much fanfare though he is a great performer, everyone loved Matthew Bosch, and Liam Knox was another good addition. And they stopped there. The studio has exclusives but I don’t consider the site-hoppers “Titan Men”.

          • c_find

I don’t see it as lazy. I agree with your last statement, yes it did sent a positive message when condom was the main method of keep one self safe, but it kinda backfired after the introduction of PreP. With more than one way to have safe sex it kinda made Titan come across as old and prudish and inavertidly helped with the HIV stigmatization ( I know this was probably not a conscious thing). Maybe it’s just me but I have no problem seeing a model that does bareback doing a scene with condoms, this is one reason I like Tim Tales, the mix represents the reality of gay sexuality not everyone wants to wear condoms but those that don’t should not be shamed for going BB like their some sort of toxic dump and those that still do wear condoms should not be casted as if their some prude.

          • Cosmic

Except PrEP only protects from HIV not the rest of the STI alphabet.

  • Kevin Jones

Well, that’s pretty sad to hear. TM has been around for so long but maybe that was part of it;s downfall.
