It’s wild that there are still three soaps on network television (General Hospital, Bold And The Beautiful, Young And The Restless), and you have to wonder who the audience is. Do housewives and stay-at-home moms still exist? Maybe so. Throw in a sprinkling of gays, and there’s your audience, I guess. The 51st annual Daytime Emmys were last night, and here’s the list of winners:

In addition to the competitive categories, they gave out “Gold Circle Honors” to soap vets who’ve been entertaining audiences for 50 years, and the three recipients this year were Suzanne Rogers (Maggie Horton, Days Of Our Lives), A Martinez (Cruz Castillo, Santa Barbara), and Jerome Dobson, the co-creator and executive producer of Santa Barbara. As a Santa Barbara stan growing up, this would’ve been a huge night for 11-year-old me to see the show’s co-creator and its leading man being honored. The greatest soap opera of all time, Santa Barbara was the first program to win Best Drama three times in a row when it took the top prize in 1988, 1989, and 1990. The show redefined the medium and often used meta comedy to poke fun at itself and the genre, while also introducing traditional super-couples like Cruz and Eden.

This might be of interest to like three (two?) people reading this, but watch the video below, and you’ll see how the acting and writing was far and away better than anything else on at the time. The clip shows Cruz and Eden at the peak of their popularity during one of their major storylines in 1989, when they were breaking up due to another man from Eden’s past named Robert Barr. Don’t worry, they ended up getting back together, but then Eden developed a split personality as a jewel thief and left the show a few years later. Actors A Martinez and Marcy Walker, who both won Emmys for their roles:
